Massey Puts Down 23 Kills, Cats Fall to No. 18 BYU
Oct 01, 2026 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Freshman Addison Massey compiled a career-high 23 kills in K-State's four-set loss, 25-27, 18-26, 26-24, 18-25, to 18th-ranked BYU Thursday night at Morgan Family Arena.
Â
Massey, a native of Las Cruces, N.M., led all players as she recorded her third performance of the season with 20 or more kills, all coming over the last five matches.
Â
BYU (10-1, 2-0 Big 12) won its seventh consecutive match and had three players eclipse the 10-kill mark led by Elli Mortensen with 19, while Claire Little Chambers and Sophia Callahan each had 13.
Â
K-State, which is receiving votes in the latest AVCA coaches' poll, moves to 9-2 overall and falls to 1-2 in conference play.

FROM THE CATS
JASON MANSFIELD, K-STATE HEAD COACH
Opening statement…Â
"Congrats to BYU. Very well coached team. We saw in film that they were going to be a lot to handle. The best team, the most talented team we played so far this season, we saw that in film, and that was confirmed tonight. But I'm really proud of how we fought back, and we're right there in that first set to steal one and go up 1-0. And I love our bounce back in the third set, but that's what it's going to take against a team like this that has a lot of offense from a bunch of different people and is really difficult to slow down. We did not slow them down enough. They hit over 300 in every set."
Â
On what K-State did well to keep the game close and what led to BYU pulling away…Â
"I think that BYU is a really talented team with four extremely talented pin attackers. I think that's where their offense starts, and then they have two middles that are incredibly efficient, hitting over .400, both of them, for the season. Their offense is a lot. You have to serve tough. I thought we were a little reckless with our serve as far as our misses and just how we missed. But, I get it, we have to try to serve aggressively and try to get them off the net, and then once we do that, then we have to make them pay by playing great defense. And I thought we did that in the third set and then in part of the fourth, but then we just gave up a streak of points again in the fourth where it kind of separated, and we couldn't catch back up. But again, I love our effort. We're close against a very, very talented team. Their ranking to me doesn't really matter. They're certainly a top team in the country, and a team that's going to be really difficult for anyone to beat because of their experience and how well they play together."
Â
On starting every Big 12 game down 0-2 so far…Â
"No one wants to go down 0-2, and we are three in a row at going down 0-2 in the Big 12. So it's certainly something that we've talked about, and clearly, we don't want it to happen. But we played better in the first set. We made 10 errors, though. You can't make 10 errors against a good team and win. So, I think it starts with being aggressive. [Addison Massey] had eight kills in the first set out of 14, and we need more help. I mean something that is pretty obvious about our team, we have one player, [Addison Massey], that has 23 kills, and the next closest is six. And so, we need more help offensively. She needs more help, and we're capable of giving her more help but we have to score the ball, and you can't get 11 kills in the second set and 11 kills in the fourth set and beat anybody good. You have to be closer to 15 kills, and we were at 16 in the third set where we won. So we got to score more."
