The Wildcats are now 2-3 heading into the last nonconference match
MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team secured their first win at home on Friday (February 20) with a win over Old Dominion during an almost five hour match at Peakform Sports and Wellness Center.
In the second match of the home stand, K-State (2-3) secured the doubles point for the third time this season while the last three matches became crucial points versus the Monarchs (1-4). The Wildcats start the series history against Old Dominion at 1-0.
The deciding singles match came down to freshman Diana Smolinska in the no. 4 spot, facing Uladzislava Manzhos. After winning a high scoring first set at 7-5, she dropped the second in similar fashion. After a back and forth final set she secured the win at 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, her first three-set victory of the spring and fifth of the year.
In doubles play, the #55 ranked doubles duo, junior Maralgoo Chogsomjav and freshman Martaa Chogsomjav, slid back in the win column after leaving Victoria Matasova and Kira Matushkina scoreless in the no. 1 spot at 6-0. Sophomore Chanel Rustemova and freshman Sasha Kyselova were successful in the no. 2 position, 6-2 over Manzhos and Marina Markina, to claim the point for the Cats.
In the no. 3 spot, freshman Varvara Bernovich and Smolinska fell short 2-6 to Lidiia Rasskouskaia and Ulyana Romanova.
Martaa defeated her first ranked opponent, #98 Matasova, also claiming her first three-set win in dual play. Playing the no. 2 position for the first time, she dropped the first set but battled back in the next two sets, including almost leaving her opponent scoreless in the last set with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 final.
Bernovich secured her first singles win of the season in the no. 5 spot. Facing Rasskouskaia, she faced less resistance in the second set to sweep her opponent, 6-4, 6-2.
Rustemova dropped her first singles match of the season, starting her match against Markina with a tiebreaker in the no. 6 position. After starting with the lead she could not clinch the first set with a 4-7 result. In the next set she could not gain any momentum, falling 6-7 (4-7), 1-6.
Facing her second ranked opponent of the spring, Maralgoo retired in the second set to #82 Matushkina in the no. 1 spot. After a close first set with a 4-6 result, she ended the second set down 0-5. Kyselova fell short again, this time playing in the no. 3 position, where she dropped two sets to Romanova at 3-6, 2-6.
K-State will wrap up the non conference schedule on Sunday (February 22) against #53 Minnesota (7-3) at 11 a.m.
FROM THE COURTS
Head Coach Jordan Smith
On getting the first win at home…
"It was great to bounce back from last week against Wichita State. This week, we tried to hammer hard on starting better, and obviously we did that on [doubles] courts one and two, so that was great to see by our girls, and that definitely helped us."
On the singles wins from the freshmen…
"Obviously, Martaa pulling out that match at two was incredible. It definitely put the momentum back in our favor and carried away for Varvara and for Diana, that was awesome. I mean, you know, we're playing for freshmen in the lineup, and for any one of those four, it would be tough. So the fact that Diana today was the one who was able to step up and win the match for K-State and prove herself that she can do it was pretty awesome to see."
