Four Wildcats Start the Fall Schedule in Two Tournaments

This marks the consecutive year the Wildcats will compete in Milwaukee and the first in Chapel Hill since 2017
MANHATTAN, Kan.- The K-State women's tennis team begins the fall schedule on Friday-Sunday (September 11-13) with four Wildcats traveling to two tournaments, the Milwaukee Tennis Classic and Kitty Harrison Invitational.
Sophomore Diana Smolinska and freshman Sabrina Balderrama are set to compete in the 50th annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic in Milwaukee, Wis., at the Nicolet Tennis Center. Friday and Saturday doubles competition will start in the morning followed by two rounds of singles play with the final championship matches on Sunday.
As a duo, the two will compete against Thea Latak and Tianna Rangan of Wisconsin-Madison at 9 a.m. Starting off singles play in the round of 32, Balderrama is set to face Illinois' Kimiko Cooper at 10:30 a.m., while Smolinska will battle Ece Gencer of Purdue at 11:30 a.m.
Fellow freshmen Lena Beuing and Marta Leon will head to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the Kitty Harrison Invitational hosted by UNC at the Chewning Tennis Center.
Last year then-freshman Martaa Chogsomjav won the singles title in Milwaukee on September 28 after six consecutive victories. Chogsomjav faced two women from Minnesota during the final three rounds, including defeating Aiva Schmitz in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 for the title.
This marks the first time K-State will compete in the Kitty Harrison Invite hosted by the Tar Heels since the fall of 2017, assistant coach Maria Linares' was part of the Cats squad in her freshman season. During that tournament Margot Decker claimed 3rd place in singles competition after going undefeated in singles play with three victories.
This weekend marks the first of 12 potential tournaments during the 2026 fall season for the Wildcats squad of 10 women. Last fall, Smolinska competed in four tournaments, going 9-4 in singles play. The three freshmen are all international additions, Balderrama (Venezuela), Beuing (Germany) and Leon (Spain), all looking to make an impact for the young K-State team.
