General Reminders
- BSB games for ESPN will be produced out of the WSC Control Room. BSB videoboard productions will be produced out of the BD Control Room at Volleyball.Â
- Reminder to clock in and out of your shift every time you work. There is a clock located in the baseball stadium in Ops room across from elevator. Camera ops do not need to come to WSC.
- For baseball you may park anywhere in the football west parking lot. Access to the stadium before the game will be through the south gates. To access stadium you will walk past volleyball and track to South side of baseball stadium. All cameras and equipment will be stored in the BSB broadcast booth on the 2nd floor for you to access when you arrive.
- The clear bag policy will be in effect for all events. Please leave any bags, backpacks, purses, etc that you don’t need at home or in your car. Any bags that are brought into the stadium by media (which is us) will need to be checked and tagged.
- Meals and drinks will generally be provided for crew in the BSB press box. For those working in WSC someone will bring food back for everyone. Meals being provided is a luxury and it’s always possible that you may not have time to eat due to production schedule, setup issues, or other issues. Always be prepared to miss a meal if necessary.
- Gates open 1 hour prior to game time. Once gates are open we should not be hanging out in the hallway outside of the press box. At this time you should either be at your position or if you are trying to stay out of the rain you can be under the overhang by the concession stands. We need to keep the hallway clear for suite holder access.
- If you have any questions about anything you will be doing on gameday, please ask ahead of time so we can get you caught up to speed before the day of the game.
- If you are operating camera, please be aware of the weather. It can get very cold, especially early in the season and rain is always a possibility. So be prepared and wear layers. Even if it doesn't feel cold at the beginning as the sun goes down and you are just standing still for a few hours straight and the wind is blowing it will start to feel MUCH colder. Dress appropriately, bring hats, gloves, scarf to cover your face, hand warmers etc. Better to be too warm and take some layers off than be too cold.Â
- With operating out of the WSC it is very important that ALL of our camera operators become familiar with the setup of EVERYTHING at the baseball stadium. This includes all cameras, booth setup, rain gear, sun shades etc. It will not be near as fast for someone to be able to run out to help you. The more you can be self-sufficient the better we will all be able to function. So make sure to take a look at how everything is being setup and not just your own area. Be proactive in making yourself more knowledgeable.Â
- Our center field platform for camera 4 and 6 is 16ft tall with safety railings which you access via a ladder. To access the platform you will need to walk down 1st base line around right field and the visitor bullpen. Everything except the camera itself will be stored in a tool box on this platform, which has a padlock. Get a key from the engineer or there is one located in the rack drawer in the broadcast booth. Please be careful when moving items in and out of the box and try to avoid banging them against the sides of the box. We do not want knobs or levers being damaged due to carelessness, use two people if you need help. Also please be sure that the box is closed and lock is secured before leaving.
- All camera SMPTE cables are connecting to camera shed fiber converters which need to be turned on and off each game. These are located in a mounted box near each camera. Camera 2, 3, and 5 have two boxes, one that houses the camera shed and the other that holds the SMPTE cable and power for the shed. You only need to access the one with the cable and the shed. To power the shed on and off just plug the power cable into surge protected outlet. We need to be sure these are locked up each night. SMPTE cable will hang up inside the box when possible (camera 2, 3, and 5). If outside (camera 1, 4, and 6) we need to be sure the end of the cable is pointing up so that water does not build up inside.
- In the Key Resources section there is a camera instruction sheet that give an overview of the main responsibilities that each camera position has during a game. There are also videos from ESPN that go over the camera responsibilities as well that are very helpful. We will try to go over these assignments before games, but if you are running camera (or doing EVS) you are expected to already be familiar with the responsibilities for your assigned camera position. Make sure to review both of these documents and examples before you come to work. Camera for baseball is different from the other sports as you can't just follow the ball all the time. The more you can keep in mind about not just your responsibilities, but others as well, the better camera operator you will be. Practice your camera moves! There is no excuse not to be ready to run your camera when the game begins. You should always be looking for shots for the director and you have to help by knowing what you are doing based on the situation in the game.Â

- There are a lot of stats in baseball. Learning to read a box score and understanding the plays is vital. If your knowledge of baseball is low you need to put some effort into making yourself familiar with what is going on. Watch some games and do some studying and you will get much better at your job.

- This is something everyone on our crew should be able to do quickly and efficiently. There are many videos online covering this topic as well, so feel free to do a search for it if you are still having trouble.
