    1974

Lon Kruger is one of those rare sports figures whose accomplishments in two categories qualify him for the K-State Athletics Hall of Fame.

After showing promise as a player his sophomore season by winning Big Eight Conference Newcomer of the Year, Kruger followed his junior and senior seasons by earning Big Eight Player of the Year honors.  Additional honors came off the court as he was a two-time Academic All-American as a student-athlete.

Kruger helped K-State win back-to-back league titles in 1972 and 1973. He finished with 1,063 points in his three seasons, scoring 17.6 points per game as a senior.

He was drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in the 1974 NBA?Draft.  Kruger later returned to his alma mater to coach men’s basketball where he directed the Wildcats to an 81-47 record and four straight trips to the NCAA?Tournament.
