St. Charles, Mo. - Coming off of last week's victory at Colbert Hills, the Kansas State men's golf team is 16 shots from the lead after firing a two-round total of 585 Monday in the Purina Classic hosted by Missouri at the Missouri Bluffs Golf Course. The Wildcats were tied for third place after the first round, but struggled through the second round, due to the windy conditions.
Senior Matt Williams and sophomore Aaron Watkins led K-State, posting two round totals of 3-over-par 145 to tie for 23rd individually going into the final round. Watkins also carded the low round of the day for the 'Cats with a 1-under-par 70 during the morning round.
Team co-captain Bryan Milberger shot back-to-back rounds of 74 for a total of 148 to tie for 37th, and junior Mark Sprecker sits tied for 50th with an 8-over-par 150. Rounding out the lineup was A.J. Elgert, who posted a 9-over-par 151 to tie for 57th.
"We got off to a really good start," said head coach Tim Norris. "The conditions got very windy during the afternoon, but I didn't think we would drop from third to 10th. If we step up and shoot a good round tomorrow, we should have a very respectable finish."
Illinois leads the field with a 1-over-par 569, followed by Big 12 schools Kansas and Missouri who posted scores of 573 and 574, respectively. Leading the individual race is Missouri's Mark McBride, who shot two consecutive rounds of 68 for a two-stoke lead over the field at 6-under-par 136.
The Purina Classic concludes Tuesday with tee times starting at 8:15 a.m. For complete results of the Purina Classic, visit the Missouri Tiger's website at www.mutigers.com.
