Eugene, Oregon - Kansas State's Rebekah Green finished eighth in the women's shot put, while Austra Skujyte was 10th, to lead Kansas State during the second day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field Thursday afternoon.
Green won her second NCAA All-America honor (2001 NCAA indoors) after posting a mark of 53-3.75 to finish eighth. She earned the Wildcats' first point of the championships.
Skujyte earned a mark of 51-10 to finish 10th after finishing 22nd in the long jump yesterday. It was the second-best mark of the season for each athlete. UCLA's Christina Tolson, tied for the national lead coming into the event, won the shot put with a mark of 57-0.75.
For the men, Terence Newman qualified for Friday's 100-meter semifinals with a time of 10.30 to finish fourth in the second heat. Marcus Brunson of Arizona State won the second heat with a time of 10.10. The fastest prelim time was 10.05, run by Tennessee's Leonard Scott, while Newman's time was 11th-best overall.
The top three runners in each heat, along with the next seven-best times, advanced to the semifinals.
The NCAA Championships continue tomorrow as Skujyte, who currently has the best mark in the world, begins the heptathlon at 2 p.m. Newman runs the 100-meter semis at 5:55 p.m., while Korene Hinds competes in the 800 meter finals at 6:05 p.m. Shadrack Kimeli also runs the 5,000 meters at 8 p.m. (all times PDT).
