OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - - The Kansas State women's rowing team finished the 2000-01 season at the Lexus Central Division Sprints Sunday in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The First Varsity 8+ boat of Mo McGrath, Samantha Allen, Lara Schrock, Carissa Land, Missy Darnell, Josie McClellan, Katy Bockelman, Kelli White and Glenna Yokum rowed a time of 6:52.4 in the Petite Final to place fifth. The Wildcats crossed the finish line just eight seconds behind first-place Texas.
"The First Varsity, at 1,000 meters was strongly in second place,"Hale said. "They had nice starts this whole regatta. Somewhere in the third 500 meters they stopped working as a unit. We went from a strong second place to fifth at the finish line. It was great racing and it's extremely difficult to make the finals at this race. We have a lot of work to do and we are going to continue to do it."
The Second Varsity 8+ boat of Brandy Sherwood, Katie Baxter, Amy Herrmann, Ingrid Shwaiko, Emily Benz, Anne Hagerman, Karen Wadhams, Susie Truax and Jill Anderson also rowed in a Petite Final. The Wildcats finished fifth after rowing a time of 7:19.0.
"The Second Varsity didn't have a great race," Hale said. "We lost some boat speed in the last two or three weeks. On a positive note, we saw some great racing as far as how competitive it is."
The First Novice 8+ boat, which consisted of Elane Walker, Lori Holcomb, Rachel Daily, Courtney Franssen, Amiee Finkbeiner, Lindsey Hahn, Renata Rumold, Heidi Heinrichs and Cassi Haslett raced in the C Level Final. The Wildcats finished second behind Tennessee (7:16.3). There was only one-tenth second separating first and second place.
The Second Novice 8+ boat was on the water to compete in the Grand Finals. Stephanie Riegle Katrina Regehr, Victoria Lowdon, Susan Larson, Joyce Meyer, Anna Finkelson, Lisa Kruse, Tara Jensen and Devi Spencer finished third in a hard-fought race. The Wildcats were only a second behind first-place Duke (7:23.5).
"The novices haven't been in a position where they really had to fight down the course," Hale said. "Both the First and Second Novices got in races where they really had to duke it out. It came down to photo finishes in both boats. It meant a tremendous amount for them to get into races where they had to dig deep. It was a good experience for both novice boats."
The Central Sprints wrapped up the rowing season for K-State. The 'Cats will be back on the water in the fall.
