MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association announced the All-Region Rowing Teams for 2001. Kansas State's Missy Darnell was named to the Central Region First Team, while Katy Bockelman and Josie McClellan were both named to the second team.
Rowers are chosen by their Varsity 8+ boat record, strength of schedule, nomination rank, coach's comments and their 2K ergometer score. Nominees must have raced in the Varsity 8+ a minimum of 75 percent of the time through May 1, 2001. The nomination rank is the rower's rank order as chosen by the coach.
Darnell is a native of Damar, Kan. The 5-foot-9 senior transferred to K-State from Washburn University and has been a strong force in the Varsity 8+ boat during her time as a Wildcat. Darnell has been in the First Varsity 8+ boat since the fall of 1998 and has served as co-captain of the team for the last two years.
Bockelman is a sophomore from Prairie Village, Kan. She made an immediate impact as a freshman last season. Bockelman moved into the First Varsity 8+ this season after a successful 2000 season in both the Second Varsity 8+ and the First Novice 4+ boats. She holds the Wildcat program record for indoor rowing machine scores.
McClellan is a native of Topeka, Kan. The 5-foot-11 junior arrived at K-State from Seaman High School in 1998 and started her career in the First Novice 8+ boat. McClellan particpated in the USA Women's National Rowing Team Freshman Development Camp in San Diego, California in 1998. For the past two years, McClellan has been an integral part of the First Varsity 8+ boat.
All three athletes were in the 2000 Head of the Charles First Varsity 8+ race. K-State had its best finish ever at the world-class event. The team placed 17th out of 57 boats.
"This is a great recognition for these athletes and our growing program at Kansas State," Head coach Jenny Hale said. "Even though rowing is the ultimate team sport, these young women have been able to contribute to our team in a way that makes them special. I am extremely proud of the hard work and leadership these women have shown and these awards honor their contributions. Mo McGrath, our two-year varsity coxswain, was also considered for this award by the CRCA."
