Manhattan, Kan. - The Kansas State track and field program recently announced its Athletes of the Week for the weekend of Jan. 19 and 20.
Senior Austra Skujyte was the Female Field Athlete of the Week for the Wildcats. She set a collegiate record of 4,425 points last Saturday in winning the Wildcat Pentathlon. She also set meet, school and Ahearn Field House marks with her performance.
"Austra is a good competitor who is always willing to contribute to the team's benefit," said head coach Cliff Rovelto. "After she finished the Pentathlon on Saturday with a collegiate record-breaking performance, she came back on Sunday and automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in the shot put with a throw of 53-10.50."
Senior Teena Clincy was the Female Track Athlete of the Week after her performances at the Wildcat Invitational on Sunday. Clincy finished second in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.63 seconds, then turned around and went 8.01 to finish sixth in the 60-meter dash.
"Teena is a versatile athlete who we depend on heavily for consistent performances," said Rovelto. "She is always willing to help out the team in any capacity."
Freshman Charlie Robben was voted the Male Field Athlete of the Week. He improved his season-best mark in the high jump for the third straight time, going 6-9 to post the best effort of the 2001-02 indoor season by a K-State athlete in that event.
"Charlie has shown steady improvement throughout this early indoor season," said Rovelto. "His solid performance this past weekend has shown us a small glimpse of his potential."
Junior Roberto Carvajal, the Male Track Athlete of the Week, had an outstanding and busy day for the Wildcats at the Wildcat Invitational. Carvajal placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.34), second in the 600 (1:11.08) and ran on the Wildcats' winning 4x400 relay, which went 3:15.57 to stand as the best mark of the season thus far in the Big 12 Conference.
"Roberto performed admirably on Sunday after a difficult week of training," said assistant coach Mike Smith. "He equaled his personal best in the 60-meter high hurdles, improved his personal best in the 600 by 1.5 seconds and anchored our 4x400 relay to a meet record with the fastest split of the day. His versatility has proven to be invaluable and his improvements bode well for the upcoming meets."
Kansas State hosts Kansas and Missouri in a triangular meet on Saturday.
