Wildcats Ready for Head of the Charles

MANHATTAN, Kan.- Kansas State will race in the tradition rich Head of the Charles Regatta, in Boston, Mass., on Sunday, Oct. 20. The Wildcat entries are competing on the second day of the two-day regatta. The first varsity 8+ boat will compete in the final race of the weekend at 4 p.m. on Sunday. Prior to that, the varsity 4+ boat is scheduled to race at 3:21 p.m.
Four Focusing for First Finish
The first varsity fours are looking for their first finish in the championship 4+ race on Sunday afternoon.
Last year the K-State entry in the club 4+ race captured 13th place out of 58 boats.
Trend Analysis
This is Kansas State's sixth consecutive appearance in the two-day regatta, dating back to 1997. Since then the varsity eight has improved, then fallen in consecutive years.

1998-26th (improved five places)
1999-28th (fell two places)
2000-17th (improved 11 places)
2001-24th (fell seven places)
2002-????
Based on this, not so scientific approach, the 'Cats should vault into the top 10 this time out.
Getting a Heads Up
"Head" races, a class of regattas, are generally three miles long. Boats race against each other and the clock, starting sequentially approximately 15-seconds apart.
Worlds Largest
The Head of the Charles Regatta, the world's largest two-day rowing event, was first held on October 16, 1965. In all, more that 6,000 athletes from around the world compete in 21 different race events.
'Cats in the Classroom
Kansas State senior oarswoman Alyssa Adams recently earned an outstanding accolade. She was accepted into the Phi Alpha Epsilon honorary society for architectural engineering. She adds the honor to her 2002 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar Athlete Award for her 3.55 grade point average.
Mother Nature
Last week, the Wildcats had to cancel their intrasquad race due to the unexpected weather. The weather for Sunday in Boston, Mass. is expected to be better, with a high around 60-degrees and westerly winds approximately 10-mph.
Just Like Old Times
As an added bonus, five Kansas State rowing alumni will participate in the women's club 4+ event at 1:07 p.m. on Saturday.
On Deck
On Oct. 26, the team will travel back to Iowa for the Head of the Iowa Regatta in Iowa City, Iowa. The `Cats previously competed at the Head of the Des Moines on Sept. 28.
