Pair Of Wildcats Advance In Qualifying Round At ITA Regional Championships

TULSA, Okla. - Kansas State junior Hayley McIver and sophomore Andrea Cooper won both their qualifying matches today in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships at the University of Tulsa.
McIver improved her fall record to 4-1 with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Brittney Hollady of Missouri in the Round of 64 and a win over Kim Lorenz of Kansas, who withdrew in the Round of 32.
Cooper also improved her fall record to 4-1 with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Heather Shelby of Air Force in the opening round and a 6-3, 6-0 win over Jennifer Hancock of Wyoming in the second round.
Both McIver and Cooper will play in the Round of 16 on Thursday beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Freshman Jessica Simosa reached the Round of 32 before bowing out of the regional. She defeated Christa Lang of Oral Roberts, 6-4, 6-0, for her first collegiate victory, but then lost to Rachel Hatleyof New Mexico, 6-4, 6-3.
Kansas State senior Petra Sedlmajerova and sophomore Maria Rosenberg await opponents for their Thursday matches. Sedlmajerova has a 0-3 fall record, while Rosenberg is 2-1.
The tournament also has a 48-team doubles draw. Sedlmajerova and Cooper will be K-State's No. 1 doubles team and McIver and Simosa will be No. 2. Sedlmajerova's and Cooper's fall doubles record is 3-1 and McIver's and Simosa's is 1-2.
The singles finalists and doubles champions from this week's championship advance to the 2002 Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held Nov. 7-10 at the Brookhaven Country Club in Dallas. This event, which had been played in November, is the second of three national collegiate tennis championships during the 2001-02 season (for singles and doubles). The first are the Riviera Women's and ITA Men's All-American Championships, and the third are the year-end NCAA Championships.
