Manhattan, Kan. - The Kansas State indoor track and field team will host its final regular-season home event of the indoor schedule on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 14 and 15, when the KSU Open begins each afternoon at Ahearn Field House.
The women will compete on Thursday, with the men to follow on Friday. Field events begin at 4 p.m. each day, with running events beginning at 6 p.m.
Among the schools scheduled to compete are Kansas, Missouri, Wichita State, Emporia State, Fort Hays State, Lincoln Univ., and Cloud County Community College. No team scores will be kept in the open competition.
The meet will be the final preparation for the Big 12 Conference Championships, which will be held Feb. 22 and 23 at the University of Nebraska. The Wildcat men and women had their best-ever conference finishes in 2001. K-State was second in the women's standings a year ago, with the men placing fourth. The Wildcat women are the defending Big 12 outdoor team champions.
Kansas State has gained recognition for its solid indoor season so far for both men and women. The Wildcats are ranked eighth nationally on the women's side and ninth for the men by team-power.org, a web site that ranks collegiate track and field teams based on their performances.
The Wildcats posted four qualifying marks last week for the upcoming NCAA Indoor Nationals, to be held March 8 and 9 at the University of Arkansas. Junior Amy Mortimer became the third K-State woman to earn an automatic berth to the NCAAs by running 9:17.11 in the 3,000 meters last week at the Iowa State Classic. She joined senior Austra Skujyte and sophomore Rebekah Green, who have both hit the automatic mark for the women's shot put. Mortimer currently ranks fourth in the NCAA in the 3K.
Erik Sproll, Shadrack Kimeli and the men's distance medley relay teams hit provisional-qualifying marks last week at Iowa State. Sproll, Kimeli, Thesiaus Robinson and Roberto Carvajal rank eighth in the NCAA after their DMR performance last week. K-State has posted 12 qualifying marks in various men's and women's events so far this year.
