OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - Kansas State's first varsity eight finished in fifth place in the Petite Final on Sunday on the final day of the NCAA Central Regional Rowing Championships hosted by the University of Tennessee.
The Wildcats covered the 2,000-meter course in 6 minutes, 51.9 seconds. The Petite Final was won by Clemson in 6:41.4, as the Tigers outdueled four boats that finished within four seconds of one another.
After having trouble with its start in a semifinal on Saturday, the Wildcats had a good start on Sunday and was in the middle of the pack halfway through the race. According to head coach Jenny Hale, K-State had a problem in the third 500 meters and could not make up the deficit.
"We were looking good, but hit a pretty big wall in the third 500 meters," said Hale.
Ohio State outdueled Michigan and Michigan State in the six-boat Grand Final, likely earning a berth in the NCAA National Championships later this month in Indiana.
Also Sunday, the Wildcats first novice eight placed fourth in its Petite Final in 7:37.7.
K-State won the 'C' final in the varsity fours, rowing 7:54.3 to outpace Cincinnati.
"Our goal was to win the C final with a time that would make us competitive in the Petite Final," said assistant coach Sandra Chu. "I think we did that. The kids put together an extremely aggressive race and executed their race plan perfectly. I think that boat showed a lot of growth over the course of the season."
The Wildcats were second in the C final of the second varsity eights competition, finishing in 7:05.2. Duke won the C final in the 2V8s at 7:00.9.
"They had a pretty strong last 1,500," said Hale. "We got off the line slowly and weren't able to break back into Duke. We did row aggressively and were pretty tight once we got our legs back underneath us."
The final day of the Central Regional ended the Wildcats' spring rowing season.
"This is an extremely competitive regatta," said Hale. "This wasn't our best showing as a team, but I thought there were some good things that happened. We put parts of races together, but didn't put a whole race together when we needed it.
"As a team overall, we finished largely where we were ranked."
