K-State Repeats as Big 12 Outdoor Women's Champions

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Kansas State successfully defended its women's team championship Saturday, edging Texas by one point to win the title at the 2002 Big 12 Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Audrey J. Walton Track-Soccer Stadium at the University of Missouri.
Wildcat senior Austra Skujyte was the individual high-point scorerfor the meet, finishing with 22.75 points. She placed second in the women'sshot put behind teammate Rebekah Green, placed sixth in the javelin and rana leg on the Wildcats' 4x100 relay that placed sixth.
Green joined Amy Mortimer and Kendra Wecker as individual champions on Sunday for the Wildcats. Green won the shot put in a season-best 55feet, 5.50 inches, while Mortimer won the 1,500-meter run at 4:19.26.Wecker, a freshman, won the Big 12 championship in the women's javelin bynearly 20 feet, winning the event at 173-7.
Kansas State finished with 121 points, followed by Texas with 120and Nebraska, with 117.5.
The Wildcat men finished in a tie for fifth place with Texas A&M,each scoring 67 points. K-State was led Sunday on the men's side by juniorTerence Newman, who defended his individual championship in the 100-meterdash by winning in 10.34 seconds.
Nebraska won the men's championship with 143 points, followed byTexas with 95.5 and Missouri with 75 points. Kansas was fourth on the men'sside with 72 points.
Junior transfer Jared MacLeod tied a school record with asecond-place finish in the men's 110-meter hurdles at 13.75 seconds.
MEET NOTES
* The 24 points scored by Kansas State in the women's javelin werethe most by any team in a single women's event in the meet. Nebraska had 23points in the hammer throw on Saturday morning.
* Austra Skujyte repeated as the highest scoring individual on thewomen's side. She won the long jump for 10 points, added a second in theshot put for eight points, placed sixth in the javelin for three more andhad one point on Saturday for her eighth-place finish in the discus. Shewas also credited with 0.75 points for her portion of K-State's threepoints in the 4x100 relay, giving her 22.75 points in the meet. CarlMyerscough of Nebraska and Scott Russell of Kansas each scored 20 points tofinish as high-point scorers on the men's side.
* Junior Rebekah Green went more than 17 inches past her previousseason-best to win the shot put. The school-record holder went 55-5.50 towin the event. Green also had a third in the discus and fourth in thehammer on Saturday to finish the meet with 21 points.
* Freshman Chaytan Hill had a career-best 42-6.25 in the women'striple jump to place third. She also hit a provisional qualifying mark forthe NCAA Outdoor Nationals and moved into third place on the Wildcats'career list. Queeneth Evurunobi also had a season-best with a 41-3 forfifth place.
* Sophomore Cate Holston cut 33 seconds off her career-best in thewomen's 3,000-meter steeplechase, placing ninth.
* Freshman Trisha Culbertson, who ran 35:34.66 to place fourth inher first 10K as a collegian on Friday night, added an eight-place finishin the 5,000 on Saturday. Her eighth-place finish at 17:05.26 was aseason-best by nine seconds and moved her into 10th on the Wildcats'all-time list in that event. Her 10K on Friday placed her eighth on theWildcats' career list.
* Freshman Charlie Robben had a season-high in the men's high jumpby going 6-10.25. He placed 11th for K-State in that event.
* Junior transfer Jared MacLeod tied a school record with hissecond-place finish in the men's 110-meter hurdles. His mark of 13.75matched the mark set by Travis Livingston at the 1997 NCAA Nationals.MacLeod also hit a provisional-qualifying mark with his time. RobertoCarvajal finished seventh in that event at 14.41.
* Terence Newman successfully defended his title in the men's100-meter dash, winning in 10.34 seconds.
