Wildcats Complete Third Day at NCAA Nationals

BATON ROUGE, La. - Josef Karas of Kansas State had season-bests in three events Friday to finish the first day of the decathlon in 12th place at the 2002 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships being hosted by LSU.
Karas finished the opening day of the decathlon with 3,859 points for the Wildcats. Claston Bernard of LSU led the competition with 4,385 ponts, with Ryan Harlan of Rice in second at 4,273 and Justin Youngblood of Texas-San Antonio in third with 4,202. Karas will open the second day just 101 points out of eighth place in a battle for a potential scoring and All-America spot.
Karas had season-bests in the 100-meter dash (11.04), high jump (6-3.25) and 400-meter dash (51.36) on Friday. His other marks included 23-9.25 in the long jump and 42-1.50 in the shot put. He finished fourth in the long jump for his best event-placing of the day.
Also Friday, Joseph Lee placed ninth in the final of the men's 800, running 1:50.82, while Jared MacLeod was sixth in his semifinal of the 110-meter hurdles at 13.96, failing to qualify for Saturday's final.
Full results of the semifinals in the men's 100-meter dash were unavailable late last night, but information on the LSU Athletics web site said that K-State's Terence Newman suffered an injury late in the race and finished well behind the pack, failing to qualify for Saturday's final.
No Wildcat women had events on Friday, the third day of the four-day competition. The Wildcat women had 13 points through 12 of 21 events, placing in a tie for ninth in the team standings.
