Kansas State's Boucher Falls In Round Of 16 At U.S. Amateur

SCARBOROUGH, N.Y - Christine Boucher's run at the 102nd U.S. Women's Amateur Championship came to an end Thursday as the junior-to-be was defeated 5 and 3 by former Michigan State golfer Emily Bastel.
Boucher, one of 64 players to advance out of the 150-competitor stroke-play field earlier this week, recorded a pair of dramatic come-from-behind victories during Wednesday's opening rounds of match play.
However, the native of Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, ran out of magic on Thursday, as she was unable to recover down the stretch after falling behind midway through the match.
Boucher trailed by two after the opening four holes, but recovered on No. 5 and 6 to square the match. Bastel, who competed in the 2002 U.S. Women's Open in Hutchinson, Kan., then made her move, sinking birdies on No. 7 and 8 to go back on top.
Boucher tried to keep things close on the 6,190-yard, par-71 course at the Sleepy Hollow Country Club, but suffered bogeys on No. 12 and 14 to go 4 down. Bastel then put the match on ice with a birdie on No. 15 for the 5-and-3 win.
The Kansas State women's golf team begins its 2002-2003 season at the Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., Sept. 16-17.
