EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior Miranda Smith fired a two-round total of 148 and junior Christine Boucher carded a 152 as the Kansas State women's golf team wrapped up the first day of play at the Mary Fossum Classic in a two-way tie for fifth at 617 (315-302).
The Wildcats, who opened the 2002-03 season with a third-place finish at the Chip-N Club Invitational earlier this week, got off to a rough start during the morning session, but rebounded over the day's final 18 holes to put themselves within striking distance of overall leader Michigan State.
The host Spartans carded a combined 600 and sit atop the team leader board heading into Sunday's third and final round.
Wisconsin shot at team total of 607 and stands in second place, while Kent State finished up at 609 and is in third.
"We started slowly, but hung in there and finished up with a strong round in the afternoon," said head coach Kristi Knight. "I'm proud of how we came back. We battled and gave ourselves a chance tomorrow."
Smith and Boucher led the Wildcats' resurgence over the final 18 holes, shooting 71 and 73, respectively.
Elise Carpentier shot a two-round total of 159 to finish tied for 32nd. Minnesota transfer Karen Quintelier is one stroke back of Carpentier in a three-way tie for 35th at 159.
Sarah Heffel is tied for 64th at 167.
The third and final round of the Mary Fossum Classic tees off from the Forest Akers West Golf Course Sunday morning at 9 am.
