MANHATTAN, Kan.- Seventh-year head coach Jenny Hale leads the Kansas State women's rowing team to Iowa this Saturday for the Head of the Des Moines regatta at the Birdland Marina.
This will mark the first competition of the 2002-03 campaign for Kansas State, which will compete in four regattas this fall before starting into the spring sprint season in early March of 2003.
"The fall season is always a testing ground. We do a lot of miles with lots of different boatings and combinations," said Hale.
The Wildcats return six of eight rowers from last spring's first varsity 8+ boat that received votes in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association poll for the first time last spring. Also returning are the coxswains for all three varsity boats.
Last year, at the Head of the Des Moines, the women's "A" entry in the open 8+ finished in second place, but matching that performance won't be easy.
"The stiffest competition usually comes from Iowa, which will bring their varsity squad over," Hale said.
"Since the race is an 'open' race with club teams able to enter, the Minnesota Boat Club also provides good competition this time of year, as they have been rowing all summer and are usually peaking," Hale said.
The women's open 8+ at 12:15 will be the first race of the day for the 'Cats, followed by the women's open pairs at 2:15, which is a two-person race without coxswains.
"This particular race is used by our squad for small-boat racing experience," said Hale.
The last race for K-State will be the women's open 4+ at 4:45 p.m. Races at the Head of the Des Moines run all day starting at 8:30 a.m. and finishing with the last race at 5:00 p.m. Complete race results will be available at the following website: www.desmoinesrowing.org
