Skujyte Captures Wildcat Pentathlon

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Former Kansas State All-American Austra Skujyte won the shot put by five feet and also captured the high jump on her way to victory Friday in the Wildcat Women's Pentathlon held at Ahearn Field House.
Skujyte, now representing Nike, finished with 4,157 points and outscored Barbara Szlendakova (3,917) and Nebraska's Ashley Selig (3,582). Skujyte won the shot put at 48 feet, 10.75 inches, with Nike teammate Shelia Burrell in second at 43-5. Skujyte also won the high jump at 5-7.25.
Burrell, who also serves as a Wildcat assistant coach, broke the meet record in the first event of the day, winning the 60-meter hurdles in 8.49 seconds. Szlendakova won the long jump (19-8) and Iowa State's Stephanie Suntken won the 800 meters in 2:22.93.
On the men's side, Clifford Caines went 6-7 in the high jump to take the lead in the Wildcat Heptathlon after four of seven events. Gaines, competing for the Winnipeg Optimists, scored 3,003 points on the first day to lead former K-Stater Pat Pyle (2,979) and Nebraska's Casey Thom (2,936).
Pyle won both the 60-meter dash (7.02) and long jump (22-9.75), while Caines had the best mark in the shot put (43-5). Jessie Colburn of Nebraska won the high jump (6-8.25) to climb into fifth.
The final three events in the men's heptathlon will be on Saturday, with the 60-meter hurdles starting at 10 a.m.
