LAWRENCE, Kan. - Senior Amy Mortimer won both the mile run and 3,000 meters for women, leading Kansas State to victory in a triangular indoor track and field meet with Kansas and Missouri held Friday at the Anschutz Pavilion.
The winner of the annual meet retains a milk jug used as a traveling trophy for the event, which combines men's and women's team scores in a unique format. Kansas State outscored the Jayhawks and Tigers in team scoring on both the men's and women's side, finishing with 272 combined points. Kansas was second with 227.5 points and Missouri finished third at 220.5.
Kansas State has won the meet each of the last five years and in eight of the last nine years. K-State has won 12 of the 14 triangulars in the series.
"I'm very happy we won the meet," said Wildcat head coach Cliff Rovelto. "I think the score will be reflective to some degree of the caliber of the team. We had a lot of kids who had good performances and who had personal-bests.
"Amy had two good solid races. We know she's not ready yet to go fast, but she competed very well.
"We had some mistakes early in the meet and some people who didn't have good performances. I think we're capable of being really good this year, and I just want to see us live up to what we're capable of."
Mortimer won the women's mile in an NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 4:48.11. It was her first appearance in the mile during this indoor season. She came back to double in winning the 3,000, running 9:47.62. She won the event by more than 10 seconds over Valerie Lauver of Missouri.
Joseph Lee had an outstanding meet for the Kansas State men. He won the 600-yard run in 1:09.71, setting meet and Anschutz records in the process. He came back later to anchor the Wildcats' winning 4x800 relay, which also set meet and facility marks at 7:40.79.
Rebekah Green, Coby Cost and Dustin Schmidt each continued strong early-season streaks for the Wildcats.
Green set the school record in the women's shot put for the second straight week. She won the shot at 56-8.50, improving her previous-best from last week by a half-inch. Her mark broke her own meet record by more than two feet and the stadium record.
Cost set the school record in the men's weight throw for the second straight week. Cost won in 67-11.50, adding 18.5 inches to his previous school-best of 66-5. Prior to Cost's two-week string, the record stood at 64-4.50. Cost's throw also improved his provisional-qualifying mark in the weight throw.
For the second straight week, Schmidt set a career-best in the pole vault. He cleared 17-2.75 to win the event. At last weekend's Wildcat Invitational, he cleared 17 feet for the first time indoors.
Chaytan Hill won the women's triple jump with a career-best 42-1.50. Her effort improved her provisional-qualifying mark, as she became only the third Wildcat ever past 42 feet indoors in the triple jump. Her mark was a stadium record, surpassing the 41-5.75 set by Texas' Robyne Johnson in 1985.
Transfers Lysaria Roman Del-Valle and Michael Kizinkewich each made the most of their K-State debuts, winning their events.
Roman-Del Valle won the women's 800 meters in 2:12.46 to outkick Amanda Bales of Missouri. Roman-Del Valle is a transfer student from Puerto Rico. Kizinkewich, a transfer from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, won the men's high jump in his Wildcat debut, clearing 6-11.50. Kyle Lancaster went 6-9.50 to finish second for the Wildcats.
Other Wildcats who won individual events were Shunte Thomas (women's 400), Shauna Burrell (women's 1,000), Morgan High (women's high jump), Amanda Riffel (women's weight throw), Will Rogers (men's 400), Erik Sproll (men's 1,000) and Josef Karas (men's long jump).
Robbie Harriford of Kansas also won two events, capturing the women's 60 and 200 races.
Kansas State competes next Saturday at the J.D. Martin Invitational at the University of Oklahoma.
