Oct 24, 2003 | Tennis
SALT LAKE CITY Junior Maria Rosenberg was the only Kansas State women’s tennis player to advance past the round of 32 in main draw singles play Friday at the 2003 ITA Central Regional Championships held at the Eccles Tennis Center.
Rosenberg, a No. 9 seed, defeated Denver’s Jenny Trettin in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, to move on to the round of 16. There, eighth-seeded Jemima Hayward of Boise State ended Rosenberg’s run with a 6-0, 7-6 win to earn a spot in tomorrow’s quarterfinals.
In doubles action, senior Paulina Castillejos and sophomore Jessica Simosa fell to the preseason No. 21-ranked team of Sofia Holden and Barbara Zahnova of BYU, 8-2. Kansas’ Emily Haylock and K. Steinbock defeated Rosenberg and senior doubles partner Hayley McIver, 8-4.
The Wildcats had come into today’s contests with a perfect 6-0 record, after sweeping regional opponents yesterday in both singles and doubles competition.
“We were not as good today as we were yesterday,” Head Coach Steve Bietau said. “There were a few spots where we did well, but there were also some bad ones. We, however, played against some very tough competition and now, we will come home and get back on the court and get things adjusted for our final tournament at Arizona State.”
K-State will conclude the fall portion of its 2003-04 season at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational on Nov. 7-9 in Tempe, Ariz.
