K-State Equestrain Places Third at Second Show at Southern Illinois

A Kansas State English equestrian team rider has won High-Point Rider honors in every English show this season including, Sunday afternoon at King Farms in a show hosted by Southern Illinois in Marion, Ill. Sara Zurliene won with her first-place finishes in intermediate fences and intermediate flat. Truman State won the show with 32 points, while Southern Illinois came in second with 31. K-State was third with 26 points.
"Everyone rode well," assistant coach Meghan Cunningham said. "I am pleased that Sara was able to capture High-Point rider honors. She has worked very hard and is deserving of the title."
Along with Zurliene, those earning first-place finishes were Natalie Bennett (intermediate flat), Jen Blake (beginner walk/trot/canter), Jenae Grossart (novice flat), Sarah Pittenger (advanced walk/trot/canter), Natalie Poholsky (advanced walk/trot/canter) and Maureen Reynolds (open fences).
Lauren Demmel (intermediate flat), Jessica Gittleman (beginner walk/trot/canter) and Allison Woodworth (open fences) were awarded second-place ribbons.
Third-place finishers included Christy Conforti (advanced walk/trot/canter), Jacquie Griffin (novice fences), Rachel Pierson (advanced walk/trot/canter), Melissa Thompson (intermediate fences) and Kelli Wilson (novice flat).
Griffin pointed-up to intermediate flat and automatically qualifies for postseason competition. She joins the following riders who have automatically qualified for Region 2 competition: Bennett (novice flat and fences), Gittleman (walk/trot), Julie Hufft (advanced walk/trot/canter), Thompson (intermediate flat and fences) and Waxman (intermediate flat). K-State will host this year's English regionals, March 16 at Fox Creek Stables. Pierson and Pittenger are both within one point of qualifying.
The English team will next ride at a final reguar season home show on March 15 before regionals the following day at Fox Creek Stables. Results will be available after the show at www.k-statesports.com
