FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Amy Mortimer and Joseph Lee each earned All-America status with their finishes Saturday at the 2003 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by the University of Arkansas.
Mortimer placed sixth in the women's 3,000-meter run, finishing in a season-best 9:15.08. The All-America certificate was her fifth at the indoor championships and her 11th during her career at K-State. Shalane Flanagan topped a strong field to win the 3,000 in 9:01.05.
Lee was fifth in the men's 800 meters at 1:48.46 to earn his All-America honor. Sophomore Nate Brannen of Michigan won the 800 in 1:47.79. Lee outleaned Jackson Langat at the line to earn fifth place by 0.04 seconds.
Kansas State's women finished with six points to tie for 27th in the team standings.
The Wildcats got three points Saturday from Mortimer and three on Friday from Morgan High in the high jump. LSU comfortably won the women's team championship, with its 62 points far outdistancing South Carolina and Florida, which tied for second with 44 points.
Lee's four points in the 800 were the only points scored by the Wildcat men. K-State finished in a tie for 45th in the team standings, which were dominated by host Arkansas. The Razorbacks finished with 52 points, with Auburn in second with 28 and Nebraska in third with 26.
Also Saturday, sophomore Chaytan Hill placed 10th in the women's triple jump with a best mark of 43-0.50. She missed qualifying for the nine-person final by only one centimeter, having her best mark on her final of three attempts in the preliminary round.
Freshman Kyle Lancaster placed in a tie for 12th in the men's high jump on Saturday. Lancaster was one of 10 jumpers who went out at 6-11.75, with only five athletes going on to clear 7-1.50. Lancaster was placed 12th due to having more misses than some others who missed at 6-11.75. Jerrick Holmes of Northridge won the high jump at 7-3.75.
