Tennis Team Just Misses Upsetting Baylor

WACO, Texas - The Kansas State tennis team lost its third match of the season and second of the Big 12 campaign when it fell to 42nd-ranked Baylor, 4-3, Saturday at the Baylor Center. It was the Wildcats' third loss to a team ranked higher in the ITA rankings.
With the loss, the Wildcats are now 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the league. Baylor improved to 6-6 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
"It was a tough, hard-fought match. We didn't take care of enough of the little things and they do you in," Kansas State head coach Steve Bietau said. "Overall all the effort was good. We fought hard but there were places where we didn't play smart and didn't take advantage when we had the opportunity."
Kansas State trailed early in the match, dropping the doubles point. K-State's No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Andrea Cooper and freshman Jessica Simosa lost to Alison Bradley and Daria Potapova, 8-3. The duo is now 3-3 this spring and and 0-3 in the Big 12. At No. 2 doubles, senior Petra Sedlmajerova and junior Paulina Castillejos went to a tie-breaker before losing to Anna Moncolova and Vida Mulec, 9-8 (3). The pair are 4-3 in dual matches and 1-3 in the league. The Wildcats No. 3 doubles team won its third-straight match. Junior Hayley McIver and sophomore Maria Rosenberg beat Stephanie Balzert and Izabela Mijic, 8-6, to improve to 5-1 this spring and remain undefeated at 3-0 in the conference.
Baylor increased its lead to 3-0 when Castillejos lost to Potapova, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles and Simosa was defeated in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 by Balzert at No. 3. Castillejos is now 4-5 in dual action and 2-2 in the Big 12, while Simosa is 7-2 this spring and 2-2 in the league.
K-State drew within a point, 3-2, when Rosenberg defeated Moncolova, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 and Cooper beat Barbora Blahutiakova, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6. Rosenberg is 8-1 in dual matches and 3-1 in the league. Cooper improves to 5-2 this spring and 2-1 in conference.
The Lady Bears clinched the match with its fourth point when Mijic beat McIver in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5. For McIver, the loss was her first in Big 12 play (3-1) and third in dual matches (5-3).
Kansas State earned its third point when Sedlmajerova beat her first ranked opponent of the spring season. The senior beat No. 107 Mulec at No. 1, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
"Petra gave an outstanding effort today in both the singles and doubles. It was a match where both players left it all on the court," Bietau said.
Kansas State continues its seven-match road trip Tuesday at 2 p.m. when it plays No. 36 TCU at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
