Tennis Team Drops Nonconference Match

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Kansas State tennis team lost its fourth match of the season and second in a row to a ranked team when it fell to 36th-ranked TCU, 4-3, Tuesday at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. It was the Wildcats' fourth loss to a higher-ranked team in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.
The loss drops the Wildcats to 6-4 overall. TCU improved to 5-5.
For the second-straight match, the Wildcats split the singles matches and lost the doubles point. K-State's No. 1 doubles team of Andrea Cooper and Jessica Simosa lost to Paty Aburto and Rosa Perez, 9-7. The K-State duo is now 3-4 this spring. At No. 2 doubles, Petra Sedlmajerova and Paulina Castillejos won their match, 8-4, over Karla Mancinas and Saber Pierce, and improved 5-3 in dual matches and 6-4 overall. The Wildcats No. 3 doubles team of Hayley McIver and Maria Rosenberg had its three-straight match winning streak snapped in an 8-5 loss to Ivonne Andrade and Brenna Shackelford. The team of McIver and Rosenberg dropped to 5-2 this spring and 7-3 overall.
TCU increased its lead to 2-0 when Sedlmajerova lost to 72nd-ranked Aburto, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. The senior is now 5-4 this spring and 11-9 overall. Kansas State drew within one, 2-1, when McIver recorded a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over Mancinas. The junior improved to 4-3 in dual competition and 15-9 overall.
The Horned Frogs secured the win when they won at both No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Manhattan High product Maria Rosenberg lost in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, to Pierce at No. 2. The sophomore is 7-2 this spring and 13-7 overall. At No. 3, Simosa fell to Perez, 7-5, 7-6 and the K-State freshman now stands at 7-3 in dual matches and 11-9 overall.
Kansas State picked up its last two points when Castillejos beat Iris Jaklin in three sets, 6-3, 0-6, 7-5, at No. 4. The junior is 5-5 this spring and overall. Cooper won her third match of the dual season at No. 6 with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Andrade. The sophomore is 3-2 in dual matches and 12-8 overall.
Kansas State continues its seven-match road trip Wednesday at 2 p.m. when it plays No. 73 SMU at the Haggar Tennis Stadium in Dallas.
