AMES, Iowa - The 54th-ranked Kansas State tennis team won its third Big 12 Conference dual match of the season and posted its third shutout of the year when it beat Iowa State, 7-0, Friday at the Ames Racquet & Fitness Club.
"Today was a clean match, solid performance," Kansas State head coach Steve Bietau said.
Kansas State (8-4, 3-2) snapped a three-match streak of losing the doubles point when it won all three matches Friday over the Cyclones (2-11, 0-7). K-State's No. 1 doubles team of senior Petra Sedlmajerova and junior Paulina Castillejos extended their winning streak to three matches and improved to 2-3 in the Big 12 with an 8-6 victory over Sabrina Evers and Kristin Gyaki. At No. 2 doubles, junior Hayley McIver and sophomore Andrea Cooper improved to 5-1 overall this year with an 8-6 victory over Elizabeth Chermel and Tara Goedjen. Sophomore Maria Rosenberg and freshman Jessica Simosa played their first match of the season together and beat Evangelina Soriano and Charlotte Ljungkrantz at No. 3 doubles, 8-2.
"We wanted to make something good happen in doubles," Bietau said in reference to mixing the doubles pairings. "We weren't consistent throughout spring break and we needed to take a different approach."
In singles, Sedlmajerova improved to 3-2 in the league with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Evers at No. 1. At No. 2, Rosenberg beat Gyaki, 6-4, 6-1 to win her fourth Big 12 match of the spring. Simosa snapped a three-match losing streak with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles over Goedjen. Castillejos defeated Soriano at No. 4 singles, 3-6, 6-3 (7) to improve to 3-2 in the league. At No. 4 singles, McIver won her third-straight match with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Chermel. K-State finished the shutout with Cooper beating Ljungkrantz, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
