Tennis Team Suffers Second Loss Of The Season

NORMAN, Okla. - The Kansas State tennis team lost its second match of the season and first of the Big 12 campaign when it fell to 44th-ranked Oklahoma, 5-2, Saturday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
With the loss, the Wildcats are now 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the league. Oklahoma improved to 9-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
"I was really happy with the way Hayley (McIver), and to some extent, Paulina (Castillejos) played today," Kansas State head coach Steve Bietau said. "They have really been struggling, but they played better today. We just really didn't have the players across the board to contend with Oklahoma today."
Kansas State was down 1-0 in the match after losing two of the three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, sophomore Andrea Cooper and freshman Jessica Simosa lost to Anda Perianu and Heather Saluri, 8-2. The Wildcat duo is now 2-2 this spring and 3-2 overall. The No. 2 doubles team of senior Petra Sedlmajerova and junior Paulina Castillejos didn't fare much better, dropping to 4-2 overall and 3-2 this spring with an 8-3 loss to Annette Bryntesson and Bethany Griffin. K-State's No. 3 doubles team of junior Hayley McIver and sophomore Maria Rosenberg improved to 3-1 this this spring and 5-2 overall with an 8-6 win over Melissa Mendieta and Elena Jirnova.
In singles, the Wildcats' strongest part of the lineup lost three matches, sealing the win for Oklahoma. Sedlmajerova, who faced her second ranked opponent this spring, lost to No. 74 Perianu, 6-1, 6-1. She is now 4-2 this spring and 10-7 overall. At No. 2 singles, Rosenberg's six-match winning streak was snapped with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Jirnova. Rosenberg is now 11-6 on the season and 6-1 this spring. Simosa's six-match winning streak was also broken with a 6-5, 6-2 loss at No. 3 singles to Bryntesson. Simosa is now 10-7 overall and 6-1 in dual matches.
K-State got its first point of the day when Castillejos beat Saluri, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. Castillejos is now 4-3 this spring and overall. The Wildcats made it 4-2 with a win by McIver at No. 5 singles. She improved to 2-2 this spring and 13-8 overall with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win over Griffin.
Oklahoma picked up its fifth point when Mendieta beat Cooper, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6. Cooper is now 0-2 this spring and 9-8 overall in singles, and today was her first match back since suffering an injury.
Kansas State continues its two-match road trip Sunday at 11 a.m. when it plays No. 55 Oklahoma State at the DuBois Tennis Center.
