COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Kansas State men's golf team posted a 616 on Saturday to tie for 11th out of 18 teams after the first two rounds of the Kepler Intercollegiate at Ohio State's Scarlet Golf Course, site of last year's NCAA Championship. Host Ohio State holds the lead at 591. The Buckeyes are nine strokes ahead of Indiana, which is in second at 600.
K-State junior A.J. Elgert is in a tie for 37th after recording a pair of 77s to finish the day at 154. Juniors Aaron Watkins and Greg Douglas, as well as freshman Josh Persons, finished the day at 155 to tie for 45th. Sophomore Matt Van Cleave is currently tied for 67th at 157.
Wildcat head coach Tim Norris said the team knew the course was going to be difficult, but was still in for a bit of a shock in the first round.
"This is a very tough golf course and we didn't quite cut it this morning," Norris said. "We kind of dug ourselves in a hole the first round, and we know we have to come back. This is going to be great preparation for our conference championship at Southern Hills, which is a very difficult golf course as well."
Indiana's Jeff Overton and Toledo's Brad Heaven led all individuals for the day, posting 1-under-par 143s, to claim a three-stroke lead going into the final round.
Tournament action will wrap up tomorrow in Columbus with the final 18 holes of the Kepler Intercollegiate beginning Sunday at 8 a.m. For complete results of the Kepler Intercollegiate, please visit Ohio State's web site at www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com.
