Kansas State Equestrian Team Captures Second Zone Title of the Season

Kansas State Western rider, Brandi Vogel, was the lone first-place individual finisher at the Zone 9 competition Sunday morning hosted by St. Mary's of the Woods near Terre Haute, Ind. This was Vogel's fifth first-place ribbon of the season in open reining and qualifies her to ride at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National competition. Teammate Elaine Cobb placed second in intermediate horsemanship and qualified for nationals. To qualify for IHSA National competition a rider must place in the top two at zones.
"I am really proud of the way the women rode today," head coach Lindsay Breidenthal said. "We started out a little rough, but we finished strong. I am very excited we were able to qualify two teams for nationals."
The Wildcats won the zone team standings with 31 points and qualified as a team for nationals. Each rider will serve as the K-State point rider for their chosen class. Lauren Allen (intermediate), Amanda Gigot (open reining), Katrina Myers (beginner), Erin Peery (open horsemanship) and Kristin Tanney (advanced) will comprise K-State's team.
Gigot will also be competing at IHSA Nationals for the AQHA High-Point Rider, May 1-5 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. She will be competing against all regional high-point rider winners.
The Zone 9 English competition was Saturday morning in West Lafayette, Ind. Julie Hufft and Jessica Gittleman qualified as individuals in walk/trot/canter for nationals. The English team won the Zone 9 competition therefore advancing as a team. In addition, Allison Woodworth will be competing for the USAE/Cacchoine Cup at nationals.
This marked the first time either team was crowned Zone Champions in the sport's three year history.
