MANHATTAN, Kan.- Kansas State is set to do battle with Kansas this Saturday, April 19, in the sixth annual Kansas Cup Regatta on Tuttle Creek Lake. The women's second varsity eights are first on the slate of nine races, starting at 9 a.m., with the novice eight at 9:30 a.m., novice four at 10:00 a.m. and varsity four at 10:30 a.m. The women's varsity eight race caps the racing schedule at 11:00 a.m., followed by the presentation of the Kansas Cup trophy to the winning team. A History Lesson This is the sixth time Kansas State and Kansas have battled for the Kansas Cup. Kansas State's only cup win came in 1998. Last year, Kansas State captured the first varsity eight race in come-from-behind fashion, but lost the cup to Kansas, which won the other three races. Celebrating 40 Years The regatta promises to be a memorable one, as the Kansas State rowing programs celebrate their 40-year history, and honor Don Rose, the founder of Kansas State rowing. Rowing fans will be treated to both men's and women's races, thanks to an invitation by the Kansas State Rowing Association (men's club and junior program) to the KU crew clubs. A brunch will be served following the races at approximately 11 a.m., with the boathouse groundbreaking ceremony to follow at noon. Breaking New Ground The historic day will also feature a ground breaking ceremony at noon for the new Breidenthal Boathouse being built at Tuttle Creek Lake. The new facility will include offices, meeting rooms, athletic training areas, lockers and showers and is the product of several years of fundraising, including two key donors, George Briedenthal and Jerry Hill, each of whom gave over $500,000. Calling All Alums Following the boathouse ceremony, alumni are invited to an "Alumni Row" from 12:30-2 p.m., on Saturday afternoon, followed by a banquet at the Kansas State Alumni Association building in the evening. Last Time Out The Wildcats are back home after finishing a coast-to-coast trip over their last two regattas, going from San Diego on April 5-6 to the George Washington Invitational Crew Classic in Washington, D.C., last week. With a very challenging 1,500 meter up-river course, Kansas State's day in D.C. was highlighted by its young varsity four's performance. The fours won its heat in the morning and finished second in the grand final in 9:16.2. The varsity eight captured its heat title and finished fourth in the grand final with a 6:27.9. The second varsity eight advanced to the grand final, also finishing fourth in 7:40.8. Where do I sit? Directions to Boathouse Take Tuttle Creek Boulevard west to Tuttle Creek Dam (State Highway 13). Turn right and go across the dam and spillway. Turn left onto Spillway Marina Drive. Turn left into our driveway (Victory Drive). Park in either of the lots at the top of the hill and walk down the hill to the boathouse.
