Wildcats Win Three Field Events at Kansas Relays

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Morgan High, Mandi Peterson and Rebekah Green each won individual events for Kansas State during the opening sessions of the 2003 Kansas Relays being hosted by the University of Kansas.
High won the women's high jump Friday when she was the lone participant to clear 5 feet, 9.25 inches. She trailed Sonda Rauterkus of Kansas going into the decisive height, but cleared 5-9.25 on her first attempt, while Rauterkus missed all three tries. JaNelle Wright tied for ninth at 5-3 for the Wildcats.
Peterson had a similar trip to the victory in the women's javelin on Friday. Through five rounds, she trailed Wichita State's Allison Berry, but Peterson's sixth attempt was 156-0, beating Berry by two inches. Peeterson's mark was the best of the season by a Wildcat. Tabra Alpers was sixth at 146-1, while Heidi Stinson was 11th with a season-best 134-4.
Green dominated the women's hammer late Thursday, having four throws better than anyone else in the field. The Wildcat senior won the event at 181-6, more than six feet better than Kristina Muller of Principia, who finished at 175-2. The win in the hammer was Green's fourth this season. Amanda Riffel was ninth for the Wildcats at 155-8, with Alpers in 12th at 152-9.
In the women's triple jump Friday, Chaytan Hill was fourth for the Wildcats at 42-2.75, while Ashleigh Halderman had a season-best 37-3.25 to place 14th. K-State's women's 4x400 relay qualified for Saturday's final with an eighth-place finish in the prelims at 3:48.97.
For the K-State men on Friday, freshman Stelios Kapsalis qualified for the NCAA Midwest Regional with his 10th-place finish in the triple jump at a season-best 49-9.25.
The Wildcats' 4x100 relay team of Pat Agwu, Will Jones, Jerry McCloud and Dusty McDonald qualified third for Saturday's final with a regional-qualifying mark of 40.54, K-State's best time of the season in the short relay.
Later in the evening, K-State qualified a second relay squad for regionals when Agwu, Joseph Bennett, Jones and McDonald ran 3:10.92 in the 4x400 relay. The Wildcats reached Saturday's final by qualifying in the sixth position.
Craig Smith improved his regional-qualifying mark in the men's javelin on Friday by placing fourth at 214-7. Will Rogers qualified for Saturday's final in the men's 400 by winning his heat in 48.65.
The Kansas Relays complete four days of competition on Saturday.
