MANHATTAN, Kan. - Kansas State won the first varsity eight race to earn the last eight Kansas Cup points, but Kansas had already captured the first four races of the day and the Cup in a dual rowing regatta Saturday at Tuttle Creek Lake. Course conditions were less than perfect, as both teams battled rain and an increasing headwind throughout the morning. The Kansas Cup is a traveling trophy awarded to the overall winner of the dual match in the spring between the Wildcats and Jayhawks. Kansas has won the cup the last five years it has been contested. Kansas won the cup, 15-8, Saturday in scoring that assigns points to the winner of each race. KU took a 5-0 lead after winning a close first novice eight by two lengths. The Jayhawks followed that with a come-from-behind win in the second varsity eight. It was the tightest race of the day, won by two seconds, as KU earned five points which would prove to be crucial in the final point standings had that heat gone the Wildcats' way. "We pulled a couple of our novices out of the first novice eight race and put them in the second varsity to get the second varsity some speed," said Wildcat head coach Jenny Hale. "That turned out to be an excellent thing to do for the second varsity eight, but it did slow down the first novice a little bit." In the first varsity eight race, the Wildcats narrowly led the entire 2,000 meters, finally gaining open water on the KU boat in the last 500 meters. Kansas State finished in 8:07.9, just 6.4 seconds ahead of the Jayhawks. "The varsity eight had a good race," Hale said. "They got off the line nicely, got a couple seats on KU. That was impressive considering they had a much windier lane. They really made an outstanding move at 1,000 meters and probably took about four seats right at that point." "From 1,000 meters on they started opening up seats, so they really found a nice rhythm the second 1,000 meters of the race." Hale said. Kansas ran away with both the varsity and novice four races, finishing 21.7 and 29.6 seconds ahead of Kansas State, respectively. Following the presentation of the Kansas Cup to the Jayhawks, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the new Breidenthal Boathouse to be built at Tuttle Creek Lake. Construction is to begin this summer on the $1.3 million project. Among those present at the ceremony were Ruth Ann Wefald, Tim Weiser, Don Rose and lead donor George Breidenthal. Kansas State will be in action next on Saturday, May 3, at the Big 12 Invitational Regatta hosted by the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Sixth Annual Kansas Cup Regatta Saturday, April 19, 2003
