MANHATTAN, Kan. - The 36th-ranked Kansas State tennis team dropped its second match of the weekend when it lost 4-3 to 32nd-ranked Texas today at the Washburn Tennis Facility on the K-State campus. The last time the Wildcats lost two matches in a row was earlier this season on the road against then-No. 42 Baylor and then-No. 36 TCU.
With the loss, K-State is now 12-6 overall and 7-4 in the Big 12 Conference. Texas improved to 10-13 overall and 8-3 in the league. The Wildcats await the results of other matches this weekend before finding out their seeding for the upcoming Big 12 Conference Championship in Kansas City, Mo., April 24-27, at the Plaza Tennis Center.
"First of all, we came out today and played great in doubles," Kansas State head coach Steve Bietau said. "It was probably the best I have seen them play this year. We might have caught Texas at a good moment. Our threes played the best they have played all year and our twos were very clean. I didn't see much of the ones match, but anytime you beat a ranked team, you had to have played well. A sweep against Texas doesn't happen very much.
"I knew our shot was going to be at the bottom of the order in singles," he continued. "At the top, (Texas) just outplayed us. All you can say is that Texas outplayed us in the end."
K-State was down in the match 3-1 but came back to tie it 3-3 on the shoulders of sophomore Andrea Cooper and junior Hayley McIver. Cooper won the first set 6-3 over Macey Breece, but then dropped the second, 6-1. In the third, Cooper trailed 5-4 but won three of the next four games for the win. She improved to 11-4 overall, 6-3 in the league and 17-10 overall. McIver evened the team score after she lost the first set, 6-1, and won the second and third sets 7-5. The junior won the last three games for the victory. She is now 12-4 in dual matches, 8-2 in the conference and 21-10 overall.
Tied 3-3, the final match between K-State's Paulina Castillejos and Lindsay Blau went to a third set. Castillejos won the first set, 6-2, lost the second, 6-2 and led 3-2 in the third before Blau won four of the next five games for the match. The Wildcat junior is now 7-10 in dual and overall matches and 4-6 in the Big 12.
At No. 1 singles, Petra Sedlmajerova lost 6-2, 6-0 to No. 74 Kendra Strohm. The Wildcat senior is now 9-7 in dual matches, 5-5 in the conference and 15-12 overall. Maria Rosenberg lost 7-6(6), 6-4 to Michelle Krinke at No. 2 singles and dropped to 12-5 in dual matches, 6-4 in league and 17-10 overall. At No. 3, Jessica Simosa lost 7-6(1), 7-6(6) to Kelly Baritot. The K-State freshman is now 10-7 in dual matches, 5-5 in the Big 12 and 14-13 overall.
Kansas State picked up the doubles point for the 10th time this season and swept its opponent for the third time. The Wildcats' No. 1 doubles team of Sedlmajerova and Castillejos beat the 32nd-ranked team in the country, Strohm and Grasic, 8-5. The K-State duo improved to 5-3 in dual matches, 5-5 in the Big 12 and 11-6 overall. The No. 2 Wildcat doubles team of McIver and Cooper snapped a two-match losing streak with an 8-2 win over Blau and Baritot. The K-State pair are 4-2 in dual and league matches and 8-3 overall. At No. 3 doubles, Simosa and Rosenberg improved to 4-2 in dual, conference and overall matches with an 8-2 victory over Krinke and Breece.
