DALLAS - Kansas State juniors Greg Douglas and Aaron Watkins were among 31 student-athletes named to the 2003 Men's Golf Academic All-Big 12 Team, the league office announced Tuesday.
The conference's first team consists of 23 student-athletes who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, including Douglas and Watkins, who are both first-time selections.
"It's always nice when your best students are also your best players," said head coach Tim Norris. "Both Greg and Aaron have traveled to all of our tournaments this season and I know they have worked hard at both on the course and in the classroom. It says a lot about their commitments in both areas."
Douglas has appeared in 12 events for K-State this season and ranks fourth on the team with a 75.26 stroke average. He had his best tournament finish of the year at the Inverness Intercollegiate, shooting 3-over par 219 to place seventh.
The Wildcats' stroke average leader, Watkins ranks eighth in the Big 12 with a stroke average of 72.83. In the K-State lineup for all 12 events, he owns a team-leading nine top-20 finishes, including a win at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate during the fall.
The Kansas State men's golf team returns to action April 28, when the Wildcats open play at the Big 12 Championships at the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. K-State will then host the 2003 NCAA Men's Central Regional Golf Championships at Colbert Hills, May 15-17.
