#9 Texas Shuts Down K-State, 12-1

Austin, Texas - Senior right-handed pitcher Danny Muegge tossed a seven-hit complete game with six strikeouts, as ninth-ranked Texas posted a 12-1 victory over Kansas State in a Big 12 Conference game played on Friday evening before 4,437 fans at Disch-Falk Field.
With the win, Texas improved to 33-13 on the season and 14-5 in Big 12 Conference play, while Kansas State dropped to 12-27 overall and 2-14 in league action with the loss. The Longhorns have now won 10 of the last 11 meetings with the Wildcats, including 10 straight since 1999. K-State has now lost 10 consecutive games on the road, including all seven in conference play.
Kansas State threatened to score in the top of the first, as junior second baseman Marc Chabot led off the game with a double down the right field line. After he moved to third on a ground out, he was called out at home plate on his attempt to score on a ground out to shortstop.
Texas took advantage of some early struggles by Wildcat starter Kevin Melcher, as the Longhorns plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning on three hits and an error. Junior second baseman Tim Moss led off the inning with a single past a diving Tim Doty at first base then scored on a RBI single to right field by junior shortstop Omar Quintanilla. With Quintanilla advancing to second on the throw home, senior outfielder Dustin Majewski drove home the second run of the inning with a RBI single to centerfield. Majewski moved all the way to third on a stolen base and an errant throw by the catcher before scoring on a squeeze play by junior outfielder Eric Sultemeier.
The Longhorns added two more runs in the third inning on one hit and an error. Majewski started the inning with a stellar bunt single up the third base line before scoring on the next at-bat. Melcher botched a routine sacrifice bunt by Sultemeier with an errant throw that hit the runner and went to the fence on the right field line. With Sultemeier standing at third base, freshman catcher Taylor Teagarden laid down a perfect squeeze play to score the second run of the inning and place the score at 5-0.
Texas pushed its lead to 9-0 with four runs in the fourth inning on five hits. Senior outfielder Joe Ferin was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning then moved into scoring position at second base on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore third baseman Huston Street. Moss executed the perfect hit-and-run play on the next at-bat to score Ferin before moving to second on a stolen base. Quintanilla followed with RBI single up the middle to plate Moss then moved to third on a stolen base and a ground out by Majewski. He scored on the next at-bat, as Sultemeier forced the exit of Melcher with a RBI single to left field. Teagarden singled up the middle on the first pitch of new pitcher Jonathan Gutierrez before sophomore first baseman Curtis Thigpen loaded the bases with a walk on five pitches. Sophomore designated hitter J.D. Reininger then plated the final run of the inning with a base hit to left field.
The Longhorns continued their offensive assault in the sixth inning with three runs on four hits. Majewski, Sultemeier and Teagarden led off the inning with singles before Thigpen was hit by a pitch to plate the first run. Reininger then laced a RBI single to left field to score Sultemeier, while Teagarden scored on a wild pitch to place the score at 12-0.
Kansas State finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh inning with a run on three hits. Senior catcher Ryan Baldwin led off the inning with a single up the middle that extended his hitting streak to eight games. Sophomore outfielder Terry Blunt collected a one-out walk to place runners of first and second. After a strikeout, junior outfielder Brad Anzman scored Baldwin from second with a RBI single up the middle. Chabot followed with a single to right field to load the bases, however, senior shortstop Brett Williams flied out to end the inning.
Six Texas Longhorns recorded multiple-hit games on the evening led by Majewski, who went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a RBI. Sultemeier posted a 2-for-2 performance with two RBIs and three runs scored, while Quintanilla and Reininger added two RBIs apiece.
Chabot led three Wildcats with multiple-hit games with a 2-for-3 effort, while Baldwin and Anzman added 2-for-4 performances.
Muegge improved to 6-4 on the season in collecting the win for Texas, as he allowed just one run on seven hits in the Longhorns' first complete game of the season with six strikeouts and three walks.
Senior right-handed pitcher Kevin Melcher (0-5) remained winless in picking up the loss for Kansas State, as he allowed seven earned runs (nine total) on eight hits in 3-2/3 innings pitched with two walks.
Kansas State continues its three-game series with Texas on Saturday with first pitch set for 3 p.m. at Disch-Falk Field. The game will be televised live on FOX Sports Net with Greg Lucas and Jack Lazorko calling the action.
