Andres Gonzalez Honored With Regional Award

MANHATTAN, Kan. - In just his second year as Kansas State's assistant tennis coach, Andres Gonzalez has been named the Omni Hotels Intercollegiate Collegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
In his two seasons with the Wildcats, Gonzalez has helped the 'Cats to a 27-16 overall record and 13-9 Big 12 Conference mark. He has also been instrumental in K-State's run to its third NCAA Team Tennis Championship.
"I think Andres is an excellent and deserving coach for this award," Kansas State head coach Steve Bietau said. "He has made a huge difference with the team and the program. It has been a pleasure to work with him the last two years and I'm looking forward to next season."
Gonzalez joined the staff after a successful collegiate career at Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va. He played four years for the Cobras, where he helped them to the Region XII Tournament title and the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Championship as both a player and student assistant coach. He was named both the NAIA Region XII and AAC Player of the Year in 2001 and was ranked as high as No. 28 in singles and No.14 in doubles. The Caracas, Venezuelan, native also was named Tennessee-Virginia Athletic Conference (TVAC) Player of the Year in 1999 and 2000. Gonzalez was a three-year all-conference selection and was the team's co-captain as a junior and captain as a senior. He was undefeated in conference singles as a junior.
Gonzalez earned a degree in business from Virginia Intermont and was an ITA and NAIA Scholar-Athlete in 2001. He is currently completing his master's degree in business at Kansas State.
