MANHATTAN, Kan.- Kansas State returns to action this weekend, May 17-18, at the Lexus Central/South Region Sprints, hosted by the Oak Ridge Rowing Association on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The Wildcats start at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday in heat one of the second varsity four competition. The first varsity four and the second varsity eight will then race in back-to-back heats at 10:45 a.m. and 11 a.m., followed later by the first varsity eight at noon. Saturday's preliminary heats will be followed by semifinal and repechage races at 2 p.m. that afternoon. Finals for all divisions will start at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning with an award ceremony scheduled for 1 p.m. From the Coaches Seat " -Jenny Hale, Kansas State rowing coach ? Varsity Eight Stays Same The varsity eight won its heat against Drake and finished second in the grand final to No. 17 Texas. It is the same lineup which rowed well at the San Diego Crew Classic for the Jessop-Whittier Cup on April 5-6. At the event, the Wildcats competed well with a field of elite rowing programs from across the country, finishing only two lengths out of a petite-final championship. First-timer Second Encore with Kansas Last time out Kansas State grabbed second place in the team standings by placing second in the varsity eight grand final in 6:55.2, 11.3 seconds ahead of third-place Kansas in 7:06.5. The Wildcat varsity four had an outstanding performance and just missed catching the Longhorns in the last 500 meters. After being down with open water early, the young Wildcats, lead by coxswain Stephanie Riegle, started their sprint early in an effort to overtake Texas. In a close finish, K-State came up short by 3.9 seconds, crossing the finish in 7:55.0.
