#20 Baylor Completes Doubleheader Sweep With 10-1 Win

Waco, Texas - 20th-ranked Baylor again scored most of its runs early with a five-run first inning, as the Bears completed the doubleheader sweep of Kansas State with a 10-1 victory on Saturday afternoon before 3,049 at the Baylor Ballpark.
With the win, Baylor improved to 33-17 on the season and 13-10 in Big 12 Conference play, while Kansas State dropped to 12-32 overall and 2-18 in league action with the loss. The Wildcats have now lost 11 straight to the Bears in Waco. The team, which dropped to 1-18 away from home, has now lost 14 straight on the road, including 11 in a row in conference play.
After plating eight runs in the first inning of the first game, Baylor started the second game with the same offensive approach by scoring five runs on four hits and an error. Senior outfielder Chris Durbin started the inning with a walk then scored on a two-run home run by junior outfielder David Murphy over the fence in right field. After a pair of outs, freshman designated hitter Zach Dillon walked then moved all the way to third on a single by junior first baseman Jared Clements. Junior shortstop Trey Webb scored both runners with a double down the left field line. Webb scored the final run on an error by the shortstop on a single by freshman second baseman Kyle Reynolds.
The Bears pushed their advantage to 7-0 in the second inning with two runs on two hits. Durbin led off the inning with a double down the left field line before Murphy advanced to first on a walk. After a fly-out, sophomore outfielder Michael Griffin moved both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Dillon followed with a bases-clearing two-run single to right-center field to score Durbin and Murphy.
Kansas State finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning, as the Wildcats scored a run on three hits. Senior shortstop Brett Williams got things started with a one-out single off the glove of the second baseman. Senior outfielder Pat Maloney followed with a single up the middle before senior catcher Ryan Baldwin collected his team-leading 46 RBI with a run-scoring single up the middle.
However, Baylor responded with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning to push their lead to 9-1. Murphy started the scoring off with a walk then moved to second on a walk to sophomore catcher Josh Ford. Griffin put runners on the corners with his fielder's choice before Dillon collected another RBI with a single off the glove of a diving third baseman Zack Saunders. Clements followed with a RBI single up the middle to score Griffin for the final run of the inning.
The Bears added a single run on three hits in the bottom of the eighth inning to push the lead to 10-1. Pinch hitters Kyle Sevigny and Matt Forestiere led off the inning with singles to left side of the infield. After a fly-out to move Sevigny to third base, sophomore designated hitter Reid Brees belted a RBI single to centerfield.
Dillon paced the Baylor attack with a 2-for-2 performance with a team-high three RBIs and a run scored, while Clements added a 2-for-5 evening with a RBI and a run scored. Murphy posted a 1-for-2 effort with a team-high three runs scored to go with two RBIs and two walks.
Baldwin was the lone Wildcat with more than one hit, as he went 2-for-3 with a RBI. Williams added a 1-for-4 effort with a run scored.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Sean Walker improved to 7-4 on the season, as he allowed just one earned run on five hits in eight innings pitched with seven strikeouts and three walks.
Junior right-handed pitcher Jim Ripley (3-6) was tagged with the loss for Kansas State, as he allowed nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits in 3-1/3 innings pitched with five walks and zero strikeouts.
Kansas State concludes its three-game series with Baylor on Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. at the Baylor Ballpark.
