Tanney Keeps K-State Among Leaders in AQHA Team Competition

Sophomore Kristin Tanney kept Kansas State's Western team amongst the leaders at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championship Saturday in Murfreesboro, Tenn. She placed first in the advanced horsemanship class while competing in the team event. Junior Lauren Allen contributed two points to the team with her fifth-place finish in intermediate horsemanship.
Katrina Myers placed eighth in the Western team's beginner horsemanship. While Summer Hamil (English team, novice fences) and Natalie Poholsky (English team, walk/trot/canter) were finalists, but did not place in the top six to earn points for their respective teams.
Placings for Brandi Vogel (Western individual, open reining) and Allison Woodworth (English team, open flat) were not available at the time of release.
Sunday's competition begins at 8:00 a.m. For the English team, Woodworth (open fences) will compete. On the Western team side, Erin Peery (open horsemanship) will compete. Julie Hufft will compete as an individual in walk/trot/canter.
The American Quarter Horse Association High-Point Rider, along with the USAE/Cacchoine Cup winner will be announced at Sunday's awards ceremony. Amanda Gigot and Woodworth are competing for the two respective awards. Gigot placed fourth in the reining phase on Saturday and was in fifth going into the work off on Sunday.
After four of the five Western team events, K-State is tied for fourth with Middle Tennessee State. It trails the leader West Texas A&M by nine points going into Sunday's competition. In the English team competition, K-State is tied for 15th with two remaining classes.
During Friday's competition, sophomore Elaine Cobb became K-State's second individual IHSA National Champion with her win in intermediate horsemanship. Vogel was K-State's first national champion in 2002 with a win in advanced horsemanship.
