Kvaratskhelia Advances to Main Draw of Wilson/ITA Regional Championship

TULSA, Okla. - The qualifying round of the Wilson/ITA Region V Championships concluded on Wednesday afternoon at Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the University of Tulsa campus, with Kansas State women’s tennis advancing one to the weekend’s main draw. The Wildcats had three entrants in the 64-player qualifier, senior Judith Diaz and freshmen Tamar Kvaratskhelia and Olga Klimova. Kvaratskhelia continued her torrid fall campaign with two wins and advanced to the weekend’s main draw.
Kvaratskhelia opened the qualifying round with a straight sets win over Yawna Allen of Arkansas, 6-4, 6-3. The Tbilisi, Georgia native continued her fall dominance with another straight sets win over Jana Kubicikova of Oklahoma State, 6-1, 6-4. Kvaratskhelia is now unbeaten in the first nine matches of her career and will now place her streak on the line in the event’s main draw beginning tomorrow. In the nine matches for Kvaratskhelia, she has won in straight sets seven times.
The other freshman, Klimova, advanced to the round of 32, defeating Kaitlin Loprinzi of Iowa State, 2-6, 6-2, 10-8, early Wednesday morning. In her round of 32 match, Klimova was outdistanced by Veera Nurmi of Colorado, 6-7, 6-3, 10-4. Klimova has now played eight singles matches in the fall (4-4) with six of them being three-set matches.
Diaz fell in a marathon first round match-up against Breanna Williamson of BYU, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6. Diaz now sports a 2-4 fall singles record.
K-State will do battle against 24 other squads from around the Midwest and Rocky Mountain areas in the four-day event in Tulsa. Senior Maria Rosenberg and junior Jessica Simosa are entered into the field’s main draw of 64-players, beginning play at 9 a.m. at Michael D. Case Tennis Center on the University of Tulsa campus.
