K-State Puts Up Tough Fight In 5-2 Loss To No. 13 Fresno State
Mar 23, 2004 | Tennis
The loss was K-State’s sixth straight and dropped the Wildcats to 3-8 on the year.
“We had a lot of spots where we battled very well today,” said K-State head coach Steve Bietau. “Two of the best efforts were in matches we lost at Nos. 1 and 3. Jess had one of the better wins of her career. I was especially happy about the way she was able to close the match when she had the chance. The key now is for her to follow this up with a good performance her next time on the court. It was also great to have Judith step up and play better today in both singles and doubles. This has been a difficult year for her, but hopefully a win of this magnitude will be a sign of better things to come.”
The Bulldog twosome of Courtney Jantz and Vlatka Jovanovic set the tone with an 8-0 victory over K-State’s Aveen Alkhatib and Emily Mickelson on court three. The 44th-ranked duo of Jelena Pandzic and Lucia Tallo then dispensed with the Wildcat tandem of Maria Rosenberg and Paulina Castillejos to clinch the point for FSU.
In singles,
Things got no better at the top of the lineup for the Wildcats as Fresno then clinched the match behind a 6-1, 6-3 victory by Pandzic, the nation’s 17th-ranked singles player, over Rosenberg.
But K-State wouldn’t go down with out a battle, and fought back to earn wins on courts two and four to avoid its second sweep in as many days.
Jessica Simosa picked up the Wildcats’ first point of the day with a 6-4, 6-2 straight-set victory over college tennis’ 76th-ranked player, Tallo.
Diaz then survived a third-set tiebreaker to knock off Jovanovic 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (8) for K-State’s second and final point of the match.
