K-State Preps For 31st Annual San Diego Crew Classic
Mar 31, 2004 | Rowing
MANHATTAN, Kan. One of the largest U.S. multi-laned regattas is ahead for the Kansas State rowing team, as the Wildcats travel to southern California to compete in the 31st Annual San Diego Crew Classic on April 3-4 at Mission Bay.
K-State was given a high seed in the Crew Classic’s Women’s Cal Cup race and will look to battle for a top-5 finish in that event with the likes of Clemson, UCLA, Loyola Marymount and Louisville.
“We are excited to race against crews from outside our region, especially some of the west coast crews,” Head Coach Patrick Sweeney said. “This is a great event for gaining more experience and confidence with our racing. The Women's Cal Cup is an event where we can face some good competition and vie for a top 5 finish.”
The Wildcats’ First and Second Varsity Eights are scheduled to compete in the two-day event which begins Saturday, April 3 at 7 a.m. and concludes Sunday, April 4 at 3 p.m. More than 3,000 competitors ranging from juniors, masters and Olympians will be participating in this weekend’s regatta. The top two crews from Saturday’s heats will compete in the grand final on Sunday, while the third and fourth place finishers from the heats will advance to the petite final for places 7-12.
Last weekend, the Wildcats posted five season-opening victories at the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas. Competing among a field that included three of the nation’s top rowing programs in host Texas, Duke and Iowa, K-State’s First Varsity Eight boat lost to Texas by a mere 3.1 seconds.
K-State’s Novice squads will remain in Manhattan this weekend and compete in the Sunflower State Races on Saturday, April 3 at 11 a.m. Wichita State, KU Crew (club team) and KSRA Juniors round out the field at Tuttle Creek Lake.
“This (Sunflower State Races) is another great opportunity for us to get in some good racing and fine tune before we face cross-state rival KU next weekend,” Head Novice Coach James Rawson said.
