MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State women's rowing team prepares for a consecutive weekend of racing in the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association (SIRA) Championship Regatta on Saturday-Sunday (April 18-19) in Oak Ridge, Tenn., at Melton Hill Lake.
Racing begins at 7 a.m. CT on Saturday with the heats to place the boats in 'A' or 'B' finals which will take place Sunday morning. The Wildcats' 3v8+ will be first on the water at 7:35 a.m., followed by the 2v8+ (8:10 a.m.), 1v4+ (9:06 a.m.) and the 1v8+ (10:09 a.m.).
The 1v4+ and 1v8+ will also race a second time on Saturday. Race times will be determined by where each boat finishes in its heat.
The 2v4+ will compete once on Sunday in the final at 8:52 a.m., with finals for the 3v8+, 2v8+, 1v4+, and 1v8+ to follow.
"We're looking forward to this weekend. The team has done a good job continuing to push during training while also emphasizing the technical side of our sport," head coach Kennedy Felice said. "We're continuing to make the most of any water time we can get. Every race, we've seen progress within each boat. This weekend we want to keep building on that momentum."
Anticipated schools the Cats will race against include Dayton, Duquesne, Jacksonville, Rollins College and others.
Last season the Cats had four boats medal in the regatta, including a gold medal for the 3v8+. The 1v8+ and 2v8+ each took home silver while the 1v4+ earned bronze.
"Every time we come down the course, that is a chance for our team to keep learning and set ourselves up for Big 12s," Felice added. "We have made progress as a team this season and each race this weekend is another opportunity to continue pushing the program forward."
Last weekend K-State raced in the annual Sunflower Showdown on April 11 against in-state rival Kansas with the Jayhawks taking the Kansas Cup with 22 points.
In the first two races of the season, Sarasota 2k on March 27-28, two boats competed in the Petite 'B' final, the 3v8+ and 1v4+, during the Hornet Invitational on March 14-15, the 1v4+ won two out of its three races.
