Seven Top Ten Finishes for the Cats During Day One of Kansas Relays

Of the four K-State athletes to compete in the men’s hammer throw, three placed in the top ten. Ryan Creadick hurled his fourth regional qualifying mark with a 185-08 throw. Although he finished second, he positioned himself to be the top collegiate athlete. The first place finisher, Nick Welihozkiy who threw a 210-09, competed unattached. It was Creadick’s fourth best throw of the year with his top throw coming last week at the Miami Gatorade Invitational where he finished first with a heave of 189-06.
Coby Cost placed fifth in the hammer throw at 176-05. It was his second best throw of the season, only do be outdone by a 179-10 performance last week in which he placed third. Finishing seventh was Adam Walker who barely missed out on throwing his outdoor season best of 169-11. Today he threw a 169-01.
Two out of K-State’s three competitors in the men’s 5,000 meter run also finished in the top ten. Taking home the victory for the Cats was Mathew Chesang, crossing the line at 14:29.69. It is the second straight meet where he was shown improvement off his initial 5,000 meter time of the year, cutting over 50 seconds off his time. His initial time this season was 15:19.75 at the Emporia Relays. Rogers Kipchumba placed seventh running a 15:17.10. It was his third meet with a top ten finish.
Adding another top ten finish was Tina Todd. In her second competition this year, Todd ran the 5,000 meters crossing the line at a time of 19:30.66, which placed her tenth. Her first and only run at 5,000 meters came at the Emporia Relays when she finished fourth with a time of 19:12.16.
Amanda Riffel nearly missed out on her second straight regional qualifying mark with a 171-05 throw and fifth-place finish in the women’s hammer. Last weekend Riffel registered her first regional qualifying mark with a third place throw of 174-11. She has not finished lower than fifth this season.
