DES MOINES, Iowa Mathew Chesang brought home his first regional qualifying mark of the outdoor season, as four K-State athletes competed today at the Drake Relays inside Drake Stadium.
Chesang, running a second-place time of 14:23.39 in the men’s 5,000 meters, adds his name to the group of Wildcats that will be competing at the Midwest Regional Meet. It was his best time of the season, shaving more than three seconds off his previous top time of 14:29.69 he set last weekend at the Kansas Relays. The time also marks Chesang’s third straight meet with time improvement, and four straight meets finishing in either first or second place.

On the women’s side, Steffi Murer and Trisha Culbertson also competed in the 5,000 meters. Murer, finishing sixth at 17:12.67, was the top competitor that did not record a regional qualifying mark. It was her first time running the event this season.
Culbertson improved on her first-place 17:23.06 time at the Miami Gatorade Invitational when she finished with a 10th place time of 17:21.68.
