Four Wildcats Lauded With Academic All-Big 12 Honors

DALLAS Four members of the Kansas State women’s tennis team were honored on the 2004 Women’s Tennis Academic All-Big 12 Conference Team as announced by the league office Tuesday.
A total of 61 student-athletes were named to the men’s and women’s academic lists. Junior Jessica Simosa, a business administration major from Valencia, Venezuela, was one of four student-athletes (male or female) nominated with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. Simosa was joined on the first team by junior Maria Rosenberg, who is an art and modern languages major at K-State.
Sophomore Aveen Alkhatib, a chemical engineering major, and senior Paulina Castillejos, a management information systems major, rounded out the Wildcats’ second team selections. Castillejos, from Puebla, Mexico, is a three-time All-Big 12 honoree and recently won the Big 12 positional championship at No. 1 doubles with teammate Rosenberg.
Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the tennis academic all-league squads consisted of 49 first team members combined with 12 on the second team. First team members maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while second team members had a 3.00 to 3.19 average.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his or her team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
The Wildcats compete this week at the Eighth Annual Big 12 Conference Men’s and Women’s Tennis Tournaments on April 29-May 2 at the new Headington Family Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla. The regular season winners are declared Big 12 men and women's tennis champions, while the tourney winner receives first consideration for the conference’s automatic bids in the NCAA tournaments.
