May 15, 2004 | Track & Field
MANHATTAN, Kan. Senior Amanda Riffel led the way for eight Wildcats who gained regional qualifying marks Saturday at the Ward Haylett Invitational at R.V. Christian Track Complex.
Riffel bettered her position for the 2004 NCAA Midwest Regional meet as she recorded her third regional qualifying mark in the hammer throw with a heave of 185-07, a throw good enough to finish second. The distance currently ranks as the fourth best in school history, and is more than 10 feet better than her previous best, a 175-03 outting at the Big 12 Championships on April 29.
Ryan Creadick came within two inches of his previous career best in the hammer throw, a school record of 199-09 at the Big 12 Championships. Creadick recorded his sixth regional qualifying mark on Saturday with a third place finish of 199-07. Coby Cost finished eighth and Adam Walker finished ninth, throwing 172-09 and 168-00, respectively.
In the men’s 800 meter run, Erik Sproll was within a split second of his season best of 1:50.07 set at the Big 12 Championships with a time of 1:50.08, which placed him fourth. The time was good enough for his third regional qualifying mark of the season.
Stelios Kapsalis, having an excellent outdoor season in the men’s triple jump, registered his third regional qualifying mark with a second place finish of 50-11.00. The jump marked the third time this season he surpassed the 50 foot barrier in the event. His season high is a 52-05.50, in which he claimed first place at the Big 12 Championships.
Other Wildcats recording regional qualifying marks Saturday were Lisi Maurer in the 100-meter hurdles with a fifth place time of 13.86, Kyle Lancaster in the men’s high jump with a fourth place mark of 6-10.75, Morgan High in the women’s high jump with a second place mark of 5-10.00, Breanna Eveland in the women’s pole vault with a fourth place mark of 13-01.50.
The meet proved to be a success for all individuals competing as 13 new track records were set. There have been only two meets held at R.V. Christian Track Complex in the last six years. To go along with the new track records, an astounding 100 regional qualiying marks were recorded in Saturday’s meet.
The Kansas State Track and Field team has next weekend off as they prepare for the 2004 NCAA Midwest Regional meet, hosted by Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. The meet runs Friday and Saturday, May 28 and 29. Those athletes who qualify for the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Championships will compete Wednesday through Saturday, June 9-12 in Austin, Texas.
