Sarah Heffel qualifies for U.S. Women's Amateur

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Kansas State senior Sarah Heffel recently qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur in a playoff at Talking Stick Golf Course. Heffel was one of only five players to advance out of 36 participants.
Heffel shot a 73 to finish in a three-way tie for fifth on the Arizona course near her hometown of Mesa. In the four-hole playoff, Heffel shot four straight pars to beat out Arizona State’s Tiffany Tavee and Symantha Mendenhall of BYU.
“I’ve never qualified for the Am before, so I’m pretty excited,” Heffel said. “I’m going to be nervous. I’m sure of it. But for right now, I’m just trying to practice up and get out in the heat.”
Her nerves may be somewhat calmed seeing a familiar face on the course as she plays in the national tournament Aug. 9-15 in Erie, Penn. Heffel’s father will be her caddy.
“He carried my bag at the qualifier and it will be very nice to have him around for this too,” she said. “It’s nice to be playing so well right now, I just hope I play my best then.”
