Kansas State holds off Iowa State for 63-51 victory

Jan 26, 2005 | Men's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kan. Jeremiah Massey scored 19 of his 23 points in the second half to lead Kansas State to a 63-51 victory over Iowa State Wednesday night.

Massey also had 10 rebounds for the Wildcats (12-4, 2-3 Big 12). Cartier Martin hit four 3-pointers and scored 17 points and Fred Peete added 15 points for Kansas State.

Jared Homan scored 13 points for Iowa State (8-8, 0-5), and Damion Staple added 10 points and five rebounds before fouling out.

With Kansas State holding a 40-38 lead with 10:05 to go, Massey took over, scoring 16 of the Wildcats' final 23 points.

After Tasheed Carr's 3-pointer got the Cyclone's within 55-51 with 1:29 remaining, Massey scored on a turnaround post move and added two free throws with 44 seconds left to give Kansas State a 59-51 lead.

The Cyclones have now dropped six in a row and are off to their worst start ever in Big 12 play. The last time they started 0-5 in league play was 1994 as a member of the Big Eight.

Curtis Stinson, Iowa State's leading scorer, did not start but was first off the bench. He was held without a field goal for nearly 19 minutes, finishing with seven points on 3-for-9 shooting.

The Wildcats jumped to a quick 8-2 lead, but had just one field goal over an eight minute stretch midway through the first half.

After the Cyclones pulled ahead 17-16 with 7:09 to go in the half, Stewart hit a runner in the lane and Martin scored back-to-back 3-pointers to put Kansas State back on top.

Peete, who had been in a 3-of-25 slump over the last three games, scored on a layup as time expired to give the Wildcats a 32-25 halftime lead.

Kansas State played most of the game without Marques Hayden, who has started 13 games this season. He played sparingly in the first half but didn't come out of the locker room after halftime.
